The Netherlands is full of expat men, whose confidence has been shattered due to their experiences in attempting to date Dutch women. Women usually appreciate such gestures. Not in the Netherlands! What do I get in return? A similar pattern can be seen in the Dutch dating game. A key thing to know about Dutch women is that they like to hunt in packs. If several men are together, Dutch women, through a series of shouting, rudeness, and intimidation, will eventually home in on the man most likely to carry their shopping bags for them at Albert Heijn in the near future. What you need to know is that as an expat, if you stand your ground in face of the ugg booted onslaught, that Dutch women will forgive you and may even find your self-confidence attractive. From Dutch men, they expect total acquiescence, and the ability to follow orders. If you want to impress Dutch women, forget showing your car keys, or talking about how fine the wool is that your suits are made from.

The Shallow Man Guide to Dating the Dutch
I’m exactly five weeks into my mission to speak Dutch. While there are major advantages of my German and my English giving me a head start thanks to many linguistic similarities, I have had a major set-back in this mission that has been slowing me down tremendously; simply finding opportunities to converse! Dutch culture is different to others I am used to; everyone has been very nice and polite to me, and nobody speaks English to me, but after a brief first conversation they tend to disappear, and there is little hope of seeing them again due to their always packed schedules.
They are a bit too organised. Luckily I am finally getting through to some people and starting to socialise properly, hanging out for hours or even almost an entire day, speaking just in Dutch. Why on earth would you want to marry a Dutch woman if not for love? Well for starters we, the women of the Netherlands, all look like super model Doutzen Kroes. No really! The Dutch are blond, tall and relatively rich compared to the rest of the world. The money is obviously a plus. On the con side, our height might not be so attractive to most non-Europeans.
Furthermore, we speak a quaint language that sounds like a German dialect. However, that should not be held against us as we also speak at least one foreign language , mainly English, but you will find many who will be fluent in French, German or Spanish. All the above applies to Scandinavians too.

The term stems from restaurant dining etiquette in the Western world , where each person pays for their meal. It is also called Dutch date , Dutch treat the oldest form, a pejorative , and doing Dutch. A derivative is ” sharing Dutch “, having a joint ownership of luxury goods. For example: four people share the ownership of a plane, boat, car, or any other sharable high-end product. The Oxford English Dictionary connects “go Dutch” and “Dutch treat” to other phrases which have “an opprobrious or derisive application, largely due to the rivalry and enmity between the English and Dutch in the 17th century”, the period of the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Another example is ” Dutch courage “. One suggestion is that the phrase “going Dutch” originates from the concept of a Dutch door , with an upper and lower half that can be opened independently.
Another possible origin is double Dutch , the jump-rope variation in which partners simultaneously participate. A folk etymology is that the “Dutch” reference derives from Dutch Schultz , [ citation needed ] a New York gangster of the late s to mids, who may have used dutching to profit from gambling on horseracing, though his nickname derives from Deutsch ‘German’ , in reference to his German-Jewish background.
